"Reimagine Leadership." Interdisciplinary institute at the University of Pretoria pursuing scholarship, education, and societal engagement to advance social, environmental, and economic justice.
The Albert Luthuli Leadership Institute (ALLI) at the University of Pretoria builds on the legacy of the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership, established in 2011. Formally established as an institute in November 2020, ALLI operates with the vision to "Reimagine Leadership" and pursues scholarship, education, and societal engagement that reimagines leadership towards social, environmental, and economic justice.
ALLI's mission centers on developing leaders who prioritise social and environmental justice through evidence-based research and transformative pedagogy. The institute operates across two core focus areas: integrating responsible leadership principles into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including its flagship Master's in Responsible Leadership; and advancing leadership capabilities needed to implement complex agendas such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The latter is pursued through the South African SDG Hub, the South African SDG Policy Support Initiative, and the Master's in Development Practice.
The institute's distinctive approach combines inter- and trans-disciplinary research spanning academic boundaries to address pressing social, environmental, and economic challenges. ALLI has delivered over 200 Master's graduates and 16 doctoral students, producing numerous peer-reviewed publications. Its programmes emphasise integrity, transparency, and accountability, breeding a generation of leaders equipped to address real-world challenges.
ALLI's commitment to responsible leadership education, integration of sustainability principles, and focus on African leadership development align directly with GRLI's mission to advance globally responsible leadership in management education.
